The Host with the Most
From the Print Edition:
Saturday Night Live: How it Shapes Our Politics & Culture, September/October 2011
Between the names on the guest-host list for “Saturday Night Live” and the lists of guests, you would be hard-pressed to come up with any Hollywood, or for that matter, American celebrity who hasn’t graced the stage at 30 Rockefeller Center. But some are more favored that than others.
Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, who was also a regular guest cast member, have each hosted the program 15 times over the years. The next three, John Goodman (12), Buck Henry (10) and Chevy Chase (8) equal the top two. The oldest guest host honors belongs to Betty White, who held the microphone when she was 88 years old and 111 days, and Drew Barrymore captures the youngest host award for her M.C. role at 7 years, 271 days.
The leading musical guest is David Grohl, who’s appeared with a variety of rock bands including the Foo Fighters, and No. 2 in that category: Paul Simon tallies nine guest engagements while Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers come in at No. 3 with a total of eight guest spots. The guest list, you ask? It prints out from Wikipedia on 8 1/2-by-11 paper at 58 pages. It includes Presidents Gerald Ford, George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama and sports superstars like Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky.
