Padrón Family Reserve No. 85 Delayed

Every September, Padrón Cigars Inc. releases a new version of its Padrón Family Blend cigar to commemorate another year of the company's existence. It began with the Family Reserve No. 44, made for the company's 44th year, and last year commenced with the release of the No. 46.

The sub-brand, which is made with some of the oldest tobaccos in the considerable Padrón inventories, has done very well over the years. The Padrón Family Reserve No. 45 was named Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year for 2009, with a score of 95 points, classic on our 100 point scale.

This year is slightly different. The Padróns have created another Family Blend, but they are not calling the new size No. 47. Instead, they are calling it No. 85, after the 85th birthday of José Orlando Padrón, the man who created Padrón Cigars back in 1964 in Miami.

The Nicaraguan puros, made at the Padrón factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, are 5 1/4 by 50 parejos with that familiar sharp Padrón box press. The cigars were originally intended to ship late last week,  but a delay with packaging has pushed back the launch. Company president Jorge Padrón told Cigar Aficionado yesterday that he expected them to ship within about three weeks. They will come 10 to the box, five atop of five, with a suggested retail price of $20 per cigar.

We've smoked a few of the cigars prior to the release. They are stronger than most Padróns, with a full body and considerable richness. The first blind tasting of the cigar will appear in an issue of Cigar Insider.
