Lighting Up that Special Cigar
Posted: August 17, 2011
"I'm saving this cigar for a special occasion."
If you're a regular cigar smoker it's likely you've spoken these words at some point, or something similar. Like wine collectors, cigar enthusiasts usually have a certain cigar they abstain from smoking because they are waiting for a special moment to break it out.
That special moment could be almost anything: a wedding, graduation, child birth, reunion, last mortgage payment, Cubs winning the World Series ... you get the point.
So where am I going with this?
Well last week, I posted on Facebook a link to the tasting notes from a recent Connoisseur's Corner, the section of Cigar Aficionado magazine in which our editor's taste and rate (non-blind) cigars that have been aged.
Along with that post I asked, "Do you have a special smoke you've been aging and waiting to light up?"
This prompted some interesting responses. Here are a few examples, edited for clarity.
Rock Cody said "I have an OpusX, aged three years, waiting for my b-day, 6/18/12, to smoke it on vacation [in the] Dominican Republic."
Jonathan-Taylor Weiss said he had "Two 2001 Montecristo limited-edition double corona[s], 1995 Romeo y Juileta Churchill. Never to be smoked."
When asked why he was not going to smoke the Romeo y Julieta, Weiss explained that he was planning to gift the cigar to George Burns after his scheduled performance at the London Palladium when he turned 100 years old. Burns never did the show, though, as it was canceled due to his declining health.
