José Oliva Wins Special Florida Primary
Andrew Nagy
Posted: May 25, 2011
Score one for the cigar rights political movement as José Oliva, president of Oliva Cigar Co., won a special primary election on Tuesday for the chance to fill a vacant seat in the Florida House.
Oliva will now represent the GOP in a June 28 special general election against write-in candidate Antonio Moreno for the right to represent House District 110, which is located in Miami-Dade County, at the Florida House. Oliva is considered a heavy favorite in the election.
According to a Sunshine State News report, Oliva took 42 percent of the vote in the special Republican primary, beating out Frank Lago and Rafael Perez by a respectable margin.
Oliva, who has lived in the district since 1974, is running on a conservative platform, saying he will fight for “lower taxes, small and accountable government, conservative family values and to make Florida a business-friendly state.”

Bravo! Felicitaciones, Don Jose. I remember well all the hours you spent with us and the special aged Olivas you brought for us to smoke at Larry Monte's Cigar Club in Albuquerque. I only wish my family lived in Miami so we could all vote for you. We are certain we will see much good come from your splendid entry into public service. Hope to see you soon. Perhaps at the Las Vegas Big Smoke?

Love his product. Hate his politics. It's a wash.
