Minnesota County Passes Strict Smoking Ban

Hennepin County, the most populous county in Minnesota, has approved a ban that prohibits smoking on all county-owned property, even if a person is smoking in his or her own vehicle on that property.

On March 29, the Hennepin County Board approved, by a vote of 6 to 1, an ordinance that bars smoking on all county-owned or leased property, save for roads and a special area reserved at the county hospital's psychiatric ward.

According to a report in the Star Tribune, the line dissenter on the board, Commissioner Jeff Johnson, attempted to amend the legislation to allow smoking in one's own vehicle, but was unsuccessful.

Approximately 1.16 million people live in Hennepin County, which is where Minneapolis is located.

The new policy will be enforced with signs and takes effect July 1, starting with downtown county buildings.

There was a brief toying with the idea of banning any type of smoking in condominium buildings in the city of Toronto given the "communal" nature of the building. Fortunately that didn't come to fruition.

Won't be long until some idiot passes a law making it illegal to read Cigar Aficionado in your car too.

I live in Hennepin county. I'll make sure to smoke within the confines of my yard, but ash and throw my nubs in the sidewalk and street. My city ward (10th) tried to ban smoking inside tobacco shops. I'm not kidding. These people are morons.

I reside in Hennepin County and I really don't have a problem with this. When I smoke my Puros I could give a rip less what the county thinks. I smoke at home or at a friends house. If I have to go on county property, chances are about 100% that I won't be smoking.
Hard to say who comes up with this crap, but I really don't think it's that big of a deal. Kinda makes me think of prohibition, though. It's just a matter of time before these crazies try to prohibit smoking cigars all together. What's the world coming to?
