- More from Where to Smoke
Smoke on the Water, Weston, Florida
Posted: March 7, 2011
Nestled in a nondescript corner of Weston, Florida, surrounded by palm trees and not far from a small lake, is Smoke on the Water, a true oasis for cigar lovers in southern Florida.
The first thing that catches the eye when you walk inside the dark cigar bar is the bright lights of the walk-in humidor, a 1,000 square foot monster jammed with goodies. It seems to have just about every premium cigar brand imaginable, including several boxes of the very rare Arturo Fuente Añejo line and Fuente Fuente OpusX. There’s a superb selection of brands, particularly from the boutique cigarmakers. “We have everything except for Davidoff,” says Daniel Husley, who owns the shop with his brother Louis.
Smoke on the Water is a second act, one that followed catastrophe. “I had three stores in Mississippi, and Katrina took care of all three of them. They were totally demolished,” says Daniel, sitting in a comfortable leather chair in the back room, puffing on a dark cigar. He wasn’t there when it hit, so he asked his father to do an inventory of the shop. “It was a 40-foot wave. We were at 35 feet. I lost $1 million in four hours. They found my cigars 20 miles away.”
Daniel had planned on moving to Florida anyway, and the waves from Katrina pushed him along faster than he originally planned. But he encountered unexpected resistance when he opted to open in Weston, a planned community that did not have a cigar bar. “The city turned me down twice,” he said. He found an ally in local Alan Rubin, owner of the Alec Bradley cigar brand who makes his headquarters in nearby Dania, and who spoke up on Daniel’s behalf. “I wanted to see Daniel succeed,” says Rubin, sitting in the back room, puffing away.
The cigar bar is very large, with some 6,000 square feet of indoor smoking space, half of it in the front room, half in the back. The front room, which is open to the public, has a rectangular bar that can seat about 30 patrons, seven high-top tables, each capable of seating four, and a number of couches and low chairs spread around the room. All told, nearly 80 people can sit comfortably in the public area.
