Cuba Creates Cigars for Women

Worldwide Cuban cigar distributor Habanos S.A. has announced the release of a cigar made especially for women: the Romeo y Julieta Julieta, a 4 ¾-inch long, 33 ring gauge petit cigar.

Habanos said the Julieta size was created not only to please female cigar smokers, but in honor of the company's female employees who are essential to the manufacture of Cuban cigars.

"In Cuba, the participation of women is indispensable in all agricultural and manufacturing processes of Habanos. In fact, many processes are carried out by the majority of women and their particular sensibility, care and knowledge contribute to the making of such unique product as the Habano," declared Habanos in an official press release.

The cigars come packaged in rounded tins of five cigars designed especially for this release.

The Julieta size was first announced at last year's Habanos festival and it's taken nearly a year later for the little smokes to be ready for the market.

Although the cigar is intended for the fairer sex, Cigar Aficionado will be smoking them anyway. Look for ratings in an upcoming issue.

I wonder if they will exhibit better quality control than has been appearing in recent production of Cuban Cigars?

Instead of marketing new cigars, why not make their existing production better. Sad to say in quality control, the Nic. cigars stand head and shoulders above them.

For the most part the quality control in the factories has improved over the last 5 to 7 years.

That said I agree with the post above, my personal preference would be to make their existing lines better (taste and rolling) and get rid of most of the 'regionals'. Also, there are too many sizes/names.

For example roll the best Montecristo No.2 that they could possibly roll. Overall, I prefer the old Cubatobaco days 70's 80's and up to the mid 90's. Production was small and quality was very high.

Of course things are much different now, different hybrid seeds, marketing, competition, taste preferences, etc.

Do the cigars only light if you have two X chromosomes? How can a cigar be made specifically for women? Haha...

How, Jeremiah? It's called "marketing" mon frere.......

Would you drive a Volkswagen Beetle in hot pink or would you say they specifically made that for women? Why not? You CAN.

Would you golf with smaller, shorter, lighter golf clubs? Why not? You CAN.

Why do you order a Cape Cod instead of a Cosmo (the only difference being a dash of Triple Sec and the glass it's served in)?

Fact is...... this is a milder, smaller cigar in small packaing that's bright pink and named after the feminine half of the brand. If that's not specifically made for a woman, I don't know what is...

Gents, I don't know where you buy your cigars coming from ISOM, but I have not had any complains about quality since 2005. They are just perfect.

Hi Gents

One must keep in mind that Habanos marketing focuses on two key groups: Collectors and new-comers. From a business perspective, this philosophy makes perfect sense. The RyJ female release focuses on enticing women (who are relatively new to cigars) into trying their product. Guys like me and you are not a concern from a marketing perspective. We buy to our taste without question (hence no further investment is needed on their end). As for the collectors, well, collecting is a nice way to take a hobby to the next level. And Habanos fully recognizes this and gladly takes full advantage! Some people need to see that different band, box and vitola in order to satisfy there (second) addiction. If you have the money, hey why not. It’s the American way. It’s kind of humorous from my perspective. I see all of this emphasis on branding collecting, competition and marketing. Yet my choice is to procure a batch of customs in Havana and have a coffee and a chat with the vary man who rolled the cigar. So simple yet there’s truly nothing better IMHO.

Personally, I like the simplicity of cigar smoking. In actuality, cigar smoking is 1000 year old social past time. It’s an inconsistent vegetable product. Simply pick one, sit with some friends and go to town.

If you find that the business end of the cigar world frustrates you. Let it go. Simply go back to the basics and leave the rest to those who enjoy complication..
