He came, he saw, he conquered, and he wasn’t even trying.
The man dubbed “Cigar Guy” has become the Internet’s newest meme with his cigar chomping, Groucho Marx-style mustachioed face and outlandish appearance being Photoshopped into all sorts of images, some more louche than others.
The Cigar Guy viral craze began when Mark Pain, a photographer for Mail on Sunday, a United Kingdom-based publication, was taking a photograph of Tiger Woods at the Ryder Cup tournament in Wales last Sunday. Woods was playing with partner Steve Stricker in the morning's fourball stage and was facing a difficult chip shot on the final hole.
Woods duffed his chip straight at Pain and the photographer held his ground, capturing an extraordinary picture of the ball in midair just before it hit his camera lens. The image in itself is a great sports photograph, but it's the Cigar Guy seen to the right behind Woods that has captured the attention of the Internet community.
Cigar Guy is wearing a bright red wig on his head, which looks more like a turban, and he is sporting a bushy black mustache. HIs nonchalant stance appears out of place in the photograph. The finishing touch, though, is the large cigar brimming from his teeth. Cigar Guy's getup seems to be an homage to cigar-smoking Spanish golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Like any classic superhero, no one knows the real name of Cigar Guy, but he has inspired people. Internetters have placed Cigar Guy into iconic photographs such as Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston, the Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Album, and even the Wayne Gretzy cover issue of Cigar Aficionado. Someone is even selling a Cigar Guy t-shirt.
