Bill to Lift Cuba Travel Ban Passes Hurdle
Posted: August 2, 2010
Travel to Cuba could become a reality for Americans.
The House Agriculture Committee recently approveda bill that would allow U.S. citizens to travel to Cuba and also loosen financial restrictions in an effort to boost agricultural trade to the island nation.
Under the proposed guidelines, U.S. citizens would be free to travel to Cuba and spend money as they wish. Currently, only certain U.S. citizens can gain special permits to travel to Cuba, such as journalists, those visiting immediate family members, people promoting agricultural sales, or those visiting for religious reasons.
Many business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, are supporting the bill, which passed the committee vote by a thin 25-20 margin.
These groups have said they believe there is a potential for hundreds of thousands of Americans to vacation in Cuba.
The bill will now be read and voted on in the Foreign Affairs and Financial Services Committees.
