Cohiba Maduro 5

Original band
Cohiba Maduro 5

Released in 2007, the Cohiba Maduro 5 range is comprised of three vitolas, each wrapped in maduro-colored leaf that has been supposedly aged for five years. The three sizes are: Genios, measuring 5 1/2 inches by 52 ring gauge; Mágicos, 4 1/2 by 52; and Secretos, 4 1/3 by 40. The top leaves on the plants are picked later than normal to assure that the tobacco is as rich and ripe as possible. The tobacco is then fermented longer to give more color and flavor to the leaf.

Unlike the other Cohiba lines, the bands adorning the Maduro 5 line do not include any holograms. The genuine article has five rows of white dots, with three of these rows running above the gold foil COHIBA brand name. A gold line runs through the center of the band, too. Black scripted words against the familiar yellow reading "Habana, Cuba" appear under the gold COHIBA name. A solid black line runs along the bottom of the band where "Maduro 5" text in gold is placed.

Fake bought in the Dominican Republic

Fake bought in the Dominican Republic
An alert reader received some fake Maduro 5's from a friend who visited the Dominican Republic and sent in the counterfeit bands. Notice that the yellow color on main part of the band is darker, more orange and red than yellow. Additionally, note the poor quality of the gold lettering and lack of embossing. The black, cursive script is also not clean, as it appears to have a drop shadow. Also, only two rows of white dots appear above the COHIBA brand name on this clear fake.
