REVIEW | Punch Gran Puro Santa Rita
Santa Rita
Santa Rita
Top 25 of 2016 | Rank: 10

Tasting Note: Consider the Punch Gran Puro Santa Rita a love letter to Honduras. It is composed of Honduran tobacco, made in Honduras and serves as a good example of how vibrant Honduran smokes can be. General Cigar Co. which manufactures this brand at its STG Danlí factory, grows a proprietary tobacco in the San Agustín area of Honduras near the Guatemala border, so this blend is a very quaint expression of a region-specific terroir. And with a suggested retail price of $5.29 (before local taxes), it's also a phenomenal bargain. Punch is a heritage cigar that's been in General's possession since 1997. While it parallels Cuba's Punch brand, these non-Cuban versions are only sold in the United States. This isn't the first time that the Punch Gran Puro Santa Rita has been on the Cigar Aficionado Top 25 list—it made an appearance back in 2012. Over the last four years, the price increases have been minimal yet the quality has remained quite high. The brand debuted in 2003 when the demand for strong, full-bodied cigars had yet to reach its potential. Perhaps it was ahead of its time. It's certainly the most powerful of the Punches in General's portfolio.

First puffs of this dark, reddish-brown robusto are nutty with cashew notes and hints of fresh coconut. The toasty finish smacks of earth and cacao.

The Punch Gran Puro line came onto the scene 10 years ago and is General Cigar’s only Honduran puro, meaning that it uses only tobacco from Honduras. Blended around a proprietary dark Cuban-seed wrapper from the St. Augustín valley, this is a bold cigar that produces a very solid white ash as it burns. The high- priming leaves used for wrapper and binder are sun grown, resulting in dark, oily nicotine-rich tobacco that is also full of strength and flavor. Like all Punch cigars, it’s made in Danlí at the Honduras American Tobacco factory (HATSA). Over the last 10 years, the brand has only seen minimal price increases and is always competitively positioned in terms of suggested retail price. This year, the near-black Santa Rita size is the very definition of bargain smoke, offering all the richness and flavor of a cigar that could easily cost three times as much.

This chocolate brown robusto burns perfectly even and draws well, delivering sweet and floral smoke with profound undertones of leather, dried red fruit and a hint of cinammon.

A dark robusto with a rustic wrapper. It draws and burns evenly forming a very solid white ash. There are unsweetened cocoa flavors to the smoke along with tea notes and some saltiness.
