New Year's resolutions. Most of us make them. Some of us keep them. Many break them. Whatever the final outcome, there's something about seeing January on a calendar that inspires people to change the way they do things.
As I sit here typing, my morning coffee to my right, lit cigar smoldering in the ashtray, I'm thinking about what's to come in 2017. Here are a few of my resolutions:
Write More Blogs. Too often the challenges of the day keep me from writing down my reflections and observations. I didn't write enough blogs in 2016. I'm aiming to write more of them this year. Doing this one gets me off to a good start. Writing in many ways is like exercising—the more you do it, the easier it becomes. And speaking of exercise...
Lose A Few Pounds. Cigars are blessedly calorie-free, but most of the other things I enjoy are not. I went to Italy last summer with my family, and I never did quite drop the "pasta pounds" I put on. Those need to go.
Spend More Time Outside. I love the outdoors. In the summer I kayak, take long (for me) bike rides and play golf. In the winter I play platform tennis. Any day with plenty of time spent outdoors always seems to be a good one in my book. I need to do more of that.
Read More. I'm working my way through Winston Churchill's "The Gathering Storm," the first book in his acclaimed Second World War series. If you're interested at all in World War II, I highly recommend it. It's fascinating to read how the world slipped closer to war, and Churchill is a superb author. My favorite quote so far? "Weakness is not treason, though it may be equally disastrous."
I think that's a good start. I have a lot more on my plate. We have a big year ahead at Cigar Aficionado. This is year 25 of our magazine, and we have dynamite issues planned for 2017. I'm excited about the year ahead.
What about you? Any resolutions for the new year?
