Why I Love Drinking Sassicaia
Posted: 04:35 PM ET, October 31, 2008
I celebrated 40 years of Sassicaia in the marketplace last night with a small group of wine merchants and wine lovers at Cibreo restaurant in Florence. Owner Niccolo Incisa della Rocchetta and his stepson Sebastiano Rosa brought every vintage ever commercially made at their Tuscan wine estate of Tenuta San Guido for the 14 of us to taste last night. Point Fingers the Right Way in Montalcino

I wasn't surprised with the news today that the wine producers' association in Montalcino overwhelmingly voted to maintain current regulations for producing Brunello di Montalcino, the famous red of the region. Despite some proposed initiatives to allow partial addition of other grape varieties in Tuscany’s great red, Brunello producers agreed that their wines should be 100 percent Sangiovese. Read more
Brunello Should Be Brunello

I had a quick lunch yesterday at my office with Enrico Viglierchio, general manager of Banfi, the large American-owned Brunello di Montalcino producer, and he looked relieved as we drank a bottle of his 2003 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura. Read more
All We Need Is Love

Restaurants are going to have to give their customers a lot of love in these difficult economic times, especially if the places are serving wine lovers like you and me. Let's get back to quality from prices and the doom and gloom of the financial world. I was in London about a week ago for a tasting of 2005 Bordeaux organized by wine merchants Farr Vintners. It was the chance to revisit a number of wines that I hadn't tasted for a while. Read more
Stock Market, Wine Market Blues

I may have seen the writing on the wall on Monday night for prices for collectible, blue chip wines. But I don’t think you have to be clairvoyant to know what is coming.
I attended a charity auction in Montreal, and a number of big name wines, particularly from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, were not making reserves and selling under past auction and retail prices. Read more
Message in the Bottle from Grange
Posted: 10:19 AM ET, October 06, 2008
Looking at all the responses from last week's blog about the Grange vertical, it’s obvious that Australia’s most famous red has a strong following.
This juicy red was voluptuous, to say the least. It was like a strip tease when you poured it in the glass. Read more
Grange Hermitage: Balance with Power
Posted: 04:19 PM ET, October 03, 2008
I went to an amazing tasting of Penfolds Grange last night in London, organized by Marlon Abela, the well-known restaurateur who owns such high-end eateries as The Greenhouse (a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner), Morton’s Club and Umu in London as well as A Voce in New York. Read more
