Bottle Shock or Not, the Movie Is Due Soon
Posted: 05:02 PM ET, 07/15/08
I completely missed Sideways. By the time I saw the film it had been a box-office hit for months. And having not seen the movie early on (and Miles’ trashing of Merlot and the subsequent Pinot Noir craze), I couldn’t anticipate the impact those two wine themes had on the wine market. Read more

When Cocktails Are Better Than Wine
Posted: 09:29 AM ET, 07/15/08
A sommelier can make a multi-course dinner special by finding a great wine-and-food pairing for each dish. In the past few years, in pursuit of the perfect match, some sommeliers have strayed outside this wine-only boundary.
The latest trend is to create cocktails to go with specific dishes, a new frontier in choosing something to drink with dinner. Read more

Warm Weather Brings Out the Best in Rosé
Posted: 05:32 PM ET, 07/14/08
Hot weather has arrived, and it’s rosé time.
I had just returned from the market and started unpacking the groceries, with ingredients for a tomato-watermelon-mozzarella salad, when my neighbor stopped by.
Chuck eyed the fixings and asked what I was planning to do with the tomatoes, watermelon, etc. Read more

A Sit Down with Chile's Marco Puyo
Posted: 01:24 PM ET, 07/14/08
When I first met Marco Puyo, it was several years ago, while he was still working at Los Vascos. At the time, he was part of a growing generation of young winemakers who seemed destined to help shape the Chilean wine industry in the coming years. Several of them, including Marcelo Papa and Enrique Tirado, have done just that. Read more

A Lucky Week in Wine
Posted: 03:49 PM ET, 07/11/08
I had a good week of drinking some amazing wines. I could say tasting, but these were wines that were served at dinners or lunches. And drinking is a lot more exciting than tasting. We all know that!
The best wines during the week were consumed during a dinner in London at the home of Stephen Browett, a long time friend and owner of Farr Vintners, a key wine merchant there. Read more

A Few Dining Options when in the Rhône
Posted: 01:58 PM ET, 07/11/08
Though work comes first (breakfast is usually skipped and lunches are light), I do get time to take in a few meals during my semiannual tours in the Rhône Valley. For those of you looking for a decent meal in the region (sometimes tougher than you might think), here are my casual thoughts on a few newcomers, as well as some more established faces. Read more

When Wine Prices Should Come Down
Posted: 05:27 PM ET, 07/10/08
Almost lost in the discussion (and a good one at that) about selling what could be wines of marginal quality is the whole matter of pricing older wines.
It seems to me that in many restaurants, wines are priced by age, or scarcity, and not necessarily quality. Read more

What to Drink with Hamachi
Posted: 03:04 PM ET, 07/10/08
Hamachi, that sushi bar staple, has a distinctive flavor. White wine, it would seem, should serve it best. It's kind of a fishy-tasting fish, the sort of thing, like mackerel, that make a red wine taste odd.
So imagine my surprise when, about halfway through our tasting menu at Restaurant Charlie in Las Vegas, sommelier Desmond Echevarre brought out a red wine to serve with seared hamachi belly. Read more

My Last Day in the Côte d'Or
Posted: 05:14 PM ET, 07/09/08
On my last day in Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, I visited Domaine d’Ardhuy, a family-owned property of 104 acres, including the 7.5-acre Clos des Langres surrounding the ancient press house. The domaine is managed by Carel Voorhuis, who joined d’Ardhuy in 2002 and made his first wines there from the 2003 harvest. Read more

Repeating History with 2007 Bordeaux?
Posted: 09:19 AM ET, 07/09/08
I was thinking about 2007 Bordeaux futures this morning after reading the well-researched article on this site that addresses the failure of France’s premier wine region’s most recent campaign. It seems to me that the top names in Bordeaux were still too greedy with their pricing, even though a number of them decreased their prices significantly compared to 2006. Read more
