More than 1,100 people had sampled nearly 30 great cigars, sipped everything from Glenlivet to Ron Zacapa and eaten from the hotel’s grand buffets. They had chatted with Rocky Patel, Manuel Quesada, Orlando Padrón, Carlos Fuente Jr. Read more
Posted: 12:34 PM ET, 04/15/09Usually by this time of year, I’ve got a few cigar-related tales from the golf course to share with you. Lighting up for the first time with the green grass under my feet is one of the noteworthy moments that I like to document every year. It’s kind of an unofficial declaration that winter is over, and spring is here. Read more
Posted: 09:57 AM ET, 04/14/09If you're anywhere near the Tampa, Florida, area, you owe it to yourself to grab a few fine cigars and head to 215 N. Dale Mabry Highway this afternoon. At 4:30, the Cigar Rights of America, Tampa’s own J.C. Newman Cigar Co. and Naples’ Rocky Patel Premium Cigars are leading a rally of cigar smokers to protest SB 1840, a bill that would tax cigars by the ounce, adding about 50 cents, 75 cents or more to each cigar you buy. Posted: 02:17 PM ET, 04/09/09If in a vacation one is looking for the chance to reconnect with family, this one at Beaches resort in Turks and Caicos showed high promise. Beaches is a version of the couples resort Sandals with the little ones in mind: plenty of kid-friendly activities, pools, eight water slides, X-Box gaming rooms, classes in how to become a scratch deejay and, of course, the beaches. Posted: 10:12 AM ET, 04/08/09I’m always happy when Ernesto Perez-Carrillo comes to New York. I’ve known him since my early days at Cigar Aficionado, and El Credito Cigars in Miami was the first cigar factory I ever visited. On that first meeting, he welcomed me with a baggie of unbanded lonsdales that blew me away with power, spice and flavor. Read more
Posted: 11:07 AM ET, 03/27/09When I watched Ernie Els win the Honda Classic last year, I was extremely happy for my friend. When he revealed during a post-tournament interview that his son, Ben, who was five at the time, was autistic, I was touched.
Since I have a nephew who has a form of autism, I knew exactly what he was now sharing with the world. Read more

We met in the Cigar Aficionado offices and chatted while smoking C.A.O.’s newest blend, the Lx2, which I think is the best one they make. Read more
Posted: 02:46 PM ET, 03/17/09Last night I had the chance to pair some of my favorite things: steak, cigars, wine and great company. It was the kickoff dinner for the Avo Compañero tour, commemorating Avo Uvezian’s 83rd birthday and the release of the newest Avo celebratory cigar. Read more
Posted: 04:43 PM ET, 03/13/09I smoked a 2003 Bolivar Belicoso from a cedar cabinet last night with some friends following a long dinner of lots of food and wine at my house in Tuscany. The wines included a bottle of 1995 Mouton-Rothschild and a 1988 Léoville Las Cases, not to mention a number of 1997 Tuscans. Read more
Posted: 04:03 PM ET, 03/11/09I am no expert on legislation in Congress because it has been a long, long time since I have looked closely at various bills in pure form, but I took the time this afternoon to review online H.R. 1105— the $410 billion omnibus spending bill passed yesterday in the U.
