Opening Day

Posted: 09:40 AM ET, 05/04/09

The hand signals across the crowded dining room were unmistakable. Two fingers held up to my friends’ lips—the gesture that clearly asked, “Are we going to have a smoke?” As I stood up and began working my way across the Grill Room at my country club, several more guys asked if I was headed to have a cigar. Derby Day Picks

Posted: 04:39 PM ET, 05/01/09

I always get a lot of calls during Derby Week asking for my picks, and this year among my top contenders is a controversial choice: Colorado.

No, Colorado is not a thoroughbred raised in the Rocky Mountains, nor the British Ascot champion of the same name—after all, he raced in the 1920s. Read more

Best Wishes for Mexico City

Posted: 02:03 PM ET, 04/30/09

I don't envy anyone in Mexico City right now. It looks bad. I would be freaking out. I have a few friends there. One is the BBC correspondent Stephen Gibbs. I used to see him occasionally when he was based in Havana. I wish he was still there and not in DF! I have been following his work everyday online with BBC. Read more

A Smoky New York City Restaurant

Posted: 04:22 PM ET, 04/27/09

I had dinner Thursday night at a great New York City restaurant. The food was lovely, but the best part was the cigar (two, in fact) that I puffed during cocktails, appetizers, entrée and dessert. The only bad part? The restaurant is only open a half-dozen times a year, and it only seats about 30 guests. Read more

A Greener (And Frostier) World

Posted: 04:58 PM ET, 04/22/09

I like to think I’ve done my part in the fight against global warming—on a very localized level. I speak, of course, about the beer fridge.

A beer fridge typically evolves from an old refrigerator that someone in the house (usually the wife) has deemed inappropriate for use in the kitchen. Read more

Big Smoke MGM Foxwoods

Posted: 09:54 AM ET, 04/20/09

The first Big Smoke at MGM Grand at Foxwoods had ended last Saturday night, April 18th. More than 1,100 people had sampled nearly 30 great cigars, sipped everything from Glenlivet to Ron Zacapa and eaten from the hotel’s grand buffets. They had chatted with Rocky Patel, Manuel Quesada, Orlando Padrón, Carlos Fuente Jr. Read more

No Golf Stories...Yet

Posted: 12:34 PM ET, 04/15/09

Usually by this time of year, I’ve got a few cigar-related tales from the golf course to share with you. Lighting up for the first time with the green grass under my feet is one of the noteworthy moments that I like to document every year. It’s kind of an unofficial declaration that winter is over, and spring is here. Read more

Florida Smokers, Unite

Posted: 09:57 AM ET, 04/14/09

If you're anywhere near the Tampa, Florida, area, you owe it to yourself to grab a few fine cigars and head to 215 N. Dale Mabry Highway this afternoon. At 4:30, the Cigar Rights of America, Tampa’s own J.C. Newman Cigar Co. and Naples’ Rocky Patel Premium Cigars are leading a rally of cigar smokers to protest SB 1840, a bill that would tax cigars by the ounce, adding about 50 cents, 75 cents or more to each cigar you buy. Family Matters

Posted: 02:17 PM ET, 04/09/09

If in a vacation one is looking for the chance to reconnect with family, this one at Beaches resort in Turks and Caicos showed high promise. Beaches is a version of the couples resort Sandals with the little ones in mind: plenty of kid-friendly activities, pools, eight water slides, X-Box gaming rooms, classes in how to become a scratch deejay and, of course, the beaches. Smoking with Ernesto Perez-Carrillo

Posted: 10:12 AM ET, 04/08/09

I’m always happy when Ernesto Perez-Carrillo comes to New York. I’ve known him since my early days at Cigar Aficionado, and El Credito Cigars in Miami was the first cigar factory I ever visited. On that first meeting, he welcomed me with a baggie of unbanded lonsdales that blew me away with power, spice and flavor. Read more
