Camp Smokes

Posted: 04:43 PM ET, 07/24/09

My buddies and I took our children camping this past weekend. We pulled up to a small island off the Connecticut coast and waded ashore, using a small raft to bring in the kids. We started unloading the gear while the boys and girls began playing, enjoying the water and sand. Read more

Cigar Tastings

Posted: 04:47 PM ET, 07/22/09

Jack Bettridge and I were chatting last week after we both wrapped up the taste test for the September/October issue of Cigar Aficionado. By the way, you guys are gonna love the cover subject….I’ll say no more.

We recalled how our taste tests used to be a lot more difficult. Read more

What I'll Do on My Summer Vacation

Posted: 04:38 PM ET, 07/20/09

My wife wants to vacation in Niagara Falls this summer.

And I don't.

It’s an argument that I won’t win, but it goes something like this:

"But, honey, Niagara Falls is for honeymooners and we're already married with kids. Read more

Rooting for the Cigar Guy

Posted: 03:39 PM ET, 07/16/09

I was at my desk this afternoon when a buddy called. He was watching the British Open. “Jimenez just shot a 64,” he said. “He’s in the lead. And he’s smoking a robusto with a red band on it.”

Getting A Head At The Bar

Posted: 02:00 PM ET, 07/13/09

What my wife has been warning me about for years finally happened. I have a skull in my home bar.

No, it's not my own pickled skull or that of some wayward guest whom I beheaded for drinking too much of my Chivas Royal Salute. It's a bottle of vodka. Read more

Summer?

Posted: 10:57 AM ET, 07/10/09

It’s being called the year with no summer in the Northeast. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about sitting out on a patio, or my back terrace to have a cigar and ended up watching another torrential downpour through the windows. Read more

The Cigar Guys (And Gals) Come to Town

Posted: 01:58 PM ET, 07/02/09

This has been a short but busy work week, especially Monday: I spent the early afternoon with the Perez-Carrillo family, and the early evening with the Quesada family.

There are some similarities here beyond the obvious—each family is among the elite of cigarmakers. Read more

One Bright Moment

Posted: 11:48 AM ET, 06/29/09

I had one of "those" days on the golf course yesterday. I was in a tournament, technically not in contention to win anything in the second round, although with a great round I might have put myself up with the overnight leaders in the net stroke category. Read more

Takin' Care of Business

Posted: 01:28 PM ET, 06/25/09

I came across a couple of Montecristo Petit Edmundos a few weeks ago in one of my spare rooms at home. I am not sure where they came from but they were in a Ziplock bag. The three cigars were dry and needed to be rehumidified. So I stuck them in my Dunhill humidor at about 68 percent humidity and let them soften a little. Read more

Panic Mode

Posted: 03:07 PM ET, 06/23/09

My worst fears have been realized.

I just received a press package from Knob Creek and tore off the brown paper wrapper with some anticipation, only to be greeted with a foreboding message on the lid of the box: "Thanks for nothing. Read more
