Burnt Ends

Posted: 03:00 PM ET, 07/08/07

Yesterday I lit a thin cigar while sitting on my front steps with my little boy. We got up, took a walk through the neighborhood, and enjoyed the time together. I puffed as he explored. He looked at the rabbit that lives next door and threw a handful of stones in a sewer grate. Read more

Maduro Cohibas in Rainy London

Posted: 04:27 PM ET, 07/06/07

“F.. them,” said one of the cigar merchants at the outdoor cigar fest in the middle of the West End of London last night. ‘This will show them that they can’t stop us.”

He looked defiant and sure of himself. Read more

Independence Day Is Cigar Day

Posted: 12:02 PM ET, 07/03/07

Tomorrow is July 4, and I’m looking forward to it as always. My wife and young boy will be celebrating with friends at a cookout, and I can guarantee you that the day and night will include a bunch of great cigars.

Independence Day brings back fond memories of cookouts at friend’s houses, hot summer nights that always ended in the dead-end street where we took our spots to watch as the adults put down empty Michelob bottles and stuck in the wooden ends of bottle rockets, torching the fuses with lit cigarettes. Sharp’ning Up Your Cocktail Talk

Posted: 12:21 PM ET, 06/29/07

Every year dictionary publishers and language arbiters announce with some fanfare words that they have decided to add to the lexicon. Because of the relentless march of technology, many of them are terms that sprout from the conversation of computer buffs and other such electronically obsessed types: blogging, podcasts, texting, for example. A Good Robusto

Posted: 09:16 AM ET, 06/28/07

I smoked a couple of Ramon Allones Specially Selected over the last week with some friends from Hong Kong. One is Alex Wong, who I believe is the greatest cigar collector in the world. He actually keeps the collection with his dad George.

Anyway, we smoked a RASS from my cellar, which was current production. Read more

The Morning Cigar

Posted: 10:20 AM ET, 06/27/07

Most workday mornings I walk from the train station to the office. Usually my goal is to time my stride so I make the lights, but today I felt like a cigar.

I stopped for a moment, took out my cigar case and removed a corona-sized Dominican cigar given to me by a friend. Read more

Ode to An Unknown Cigar

Posted: 11:00 AM ET, 06/25/07

I wanted a cigar Saturday night. It was one of those evenings that at the end of the summer, people in the Hudson Valley will say, “Do you remember that Saturday evening in mid-June?” It was perfect. Mid-70s. Low humidity. A crystalline blue sky. Read more

Smoking in an Undisclosed Location

Posted: 12:12 AM ET, 06/22/07

I feel a little like vice president Cheney: The other night I sat in an undisclosed location in New York City. But I wasn’t there hiding from terrorists, I was ducking the smoke police.

At this undisclosed location, I fired up two great cigars. Read more

Further Adventures in Spotting Smokers

Posted: 04:14 PM ET, 06/19/07

Earlier I blogged about a game I like to play that I call “Seen Smoking.” Not much to it essentially except spotting people smoking cigars. Sometimes it’s on the street, other times it’s in the media or celebrity life.

Sunday, I had a particularly good sighting while watching “Entourage,” the HBO series that just began its second season of the year. Read more

Fun Wheels

Posted: 09:58 AM ET, 06/18/07

I don’t want this blog to always be about cigars. And since I’ve been battling a nasty little respiratory flu bug the last 10 days, I don’t have a lot of current smoking anecdotes, although a friend of mine came over last night and I gave him one of my La Aurora Cien Años…the aroma was delicious and I was envious that he was smoking it and not me.
