Your Industry

Posted: 12:13 PM ET, 08/29/07

One of the great features of the cigar industry is how small it is. Yes, there are two very large publicly owned companies (Altadis and Swedish Match) that are big players, but the majority of the rest of the companies are family or individually owned. Read more

Fight For Your Cigar II

Posted: 02:59 PM ET, 08/28/07

Not long ago I blogged that it was time for you to fight for your cigar. It's time to do more.

First, an update. The U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives have each proposed to greatly increase the funding of the State Children’s Health Initiative, known as SCHIP. Read more

Smoking Politics

Posted: 11:11 AM ET, 08/27/07

Got an interesting slant on smoking politics yesterday from Lewis Shuckman, who when not purveying caviar and other fish delicacies as owner of Shuckman's Fish Co. & Smokery is a guerilla warrior in the struggle for smokers rights in the Louisville area. Read more

Starry, Starry Night

Posted: 11:07 AM ET, 08/26/07

August 12th is always one of my favorite days of the year. It’s my daughter’s birthday. And, it is night for the annual Perseid meteor shower. Every year, I prepare her meal of choice: (fresh-made pesto on pasta, caprese salad with fresh mozzarella, and sweet corn from a farm stand. Read more

New Limitada 2007s from Hong Kong

Posted: 01:16 PM ET, 08/24/07

I picked up some of the new Edición Limitada 2007s last week while I was in Hong Kong celebrating a good friend’s 50th birthday – God forbid the day comes. I was in Central and I noticed the Davidoff shop in the corner of a big retail complex, so I popped in the door. Read more

The Cigar Tax's Silver Lining

Posted: 09:28 AM ET, 08/23/07

Within a few weeks, cigar smokers of America will know whether or not they are going to get socked with a huge new tax on their favorite product. The subject was on everybody’s mind at the RTDA trade show in early August in Houston. Everywhere you turned, small groups of manufacturers were huddled together in serious conversation, trying to strategize about the best ways to tackle the problem, and get legislators in Washington to listen to their plight. Back in the Saddle

Posted: 12:32 PM ET, 08/21/07

Whew.  I’m back at work after an extended break, which included four days in the middle of my vacation getting to and from and attending  the RTDA convention. There were also 10 days on Martha’s Vineyard, and three days getting my daughter off to college in Ohio. Read more

The Draft Night Smoke

Posted: 11:46 AM ET, 08/17/07

Where did the summer go? A few weeks ago I was on vacation in Vermont, and last week I was in Houston at the RTDA. Both are in my rear-view mirror now. On top of that, I’m one week away from my fantasy football draft. Summer is just about over.

Don’t get me wrong: I love the start of football season, particularly fantasy football season. Read more

A Double at the Bar

Posted: 06:49 AM ET, 08/14/07

I smoked a 1996 Partagas Lusitania from a cedar cabinet box of 50 last night in a small hipster wine bar in Hong Kong called Bar Aedes. This is a place a lot of the wine and restaurant trade hang in, and they don’t mind smoking. So cool…

Anyway, the Lusi was one of the best double coronas I have had in a long, long time. Read more
