A Classic Cigar

Posted: 01:59 PM ET, 10/23/07

I had a classic cigar last week. It’s so rare that one of the best encyclopedias of Cuban cigars, written by Min Ron Nee and Adriano Martinez, doesn’t even include it.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Our Jan/Feb issue will feature a pair of performers that you all know, and most of you probably love. Read more

Smoking a New Padrón

Posted: 11:45 AM ET, 10/18/07

Got a call from Jorge Padrón the other day. He was coming to New York City for a dinner at the Grand Havana Room, and he asked me to come along. He told me he was passing out the Padrón Reserva de la Famila No. 44.

The what?

It’s my job to keep abreast of what cigars are on the market, and I’m a big fan of Padróns, so I thought I had smoked them all, but this was one I hadn’t even heard of before. Read more

Cigar Lovers Are Everywhere

Posted: 12:10 PM ET, 10/17/07

How many times have you started up a conversation with someone, only to discover that the other person is a cigar smoker?

It happened to me yesterday, in one of the more unlikely places you can imagine: a CT scan room.

I am undergoing a series of medical exams in honor of my 55th birthday, which is soon. Read more

A Taxing Situation

Posted: 03:21 PM ET, 10/15/07

I’m back in the office after a few days in Charleston, South Carolina, at the annual Cigar Association of America meeting. This is a gathering where some of the nation’s biggest cigar makers discuss the issues of the day, and this year no issue loomed larger than SCHIP. Read more

Taboada and His Custom Smokes

Posted: 04:37 PM ET, 10/11/07

A surprising amount is said and written about custom-made Cuban cigars. These are cigars that retired factory rollers produce in various cigar shops in Havana as well as abroad. Mostly recently I was at a La Casa del Habano in Tijuana, Mexico, and retired Rodolfo Taboada Campa was rolling in the small cigar shop. Read more

Great Old Smoke

Posted: 02:11 PM ET, 10/09/07

I had one of those cigar moments that we all dream about on Saturday night. My friend had cooked a great meal, we were working our way through a couple of bottles of fine American wines, and the conversation swirled non-stop around the table. The dessert was served, and it was time for one of those fine, old English moments. Read more

Dining in the Heartland

Posted: 10:43 AM ET, 10/05/07

New Yorkers are parochial. We know it. We don’t simply believe that our restaurants are as good as any in the world or in the United States, we know it. It is true that you can eat as well in the five boroughs as you can just about anywhere. But if you travel, and love good food, you also know that today you can be surprised by a great restaurant in almost any city, big or small, across the entire country. Read more

The Best Cigars of the Year

Posted: 03:15 PM ET, 10/04/07

I’m a happy man. My humidor is full of great cigars and I have to smoke them all.

I test cigars all the time here at Cigar Aficionado, but with each test I have no idea if the cigars I’m testing are going to be great, good, bad or absolutely awful. Read more

Cubana, Heaven and Cigars

Posted: 08:16 PM ET, 10/02/07

Maybe I was being a little dramatic, but I honestly thought that the Bolivar Royal Corona could be the last cigar of my life. I am not a great fan of Cubana airlines but I needed to take the flight this weekend to make my connection to Los Angeles. So I had no choice. Read more

The Perfect Invitation

Posted: 10:28 AM ET, 10/01/07

“Take whatever you’d like to smoke.” The words were like magic. The invitation, from my friend who has an extraordinary collection of cigars, is not uncommon, but I never take it for granted. It’s a treat. And I know it.

Well, it turned out that as the invitation was spoken, I spied a box of one of my favorite cigars staring me right in the face: Romeo y Julieta Churchills. Read more
