Savoring That Cigar

Posted: 03:20 PM ET, 11/07/07

A good friend of mine had a health scare about a year ago. A two or three a day cigar guy, his doc ordered him to cut back to one a week, along with a whole host of other dietary changes and medicinal regiments. He looks great, and says he’s even feeling better. Read more

One Satisfying Smoke in Los Angeles

Posted: 06:17 PM ET, 11/05/07

I have become a pretty good friend to a super hipster wine bar owner in Los Angeles called David Haskell of Bin 8945. His small place in West Hollywood is one of my favorite places to hang out and drink some good wine, eat delicious France meets West Coast food, and, yes, smoke cigars. Read more

Sharing a Smoke with Jose Oliva

Posted: 12:20 PM ET, 11/05/07

Jose Oliva was in town on Thursday, so I took a little drive after work to Club Perfecto in South Norwalk. Jose was hanging out with some of the members, smoking cigars and playing a little poker. (Don’t raid the place—they play for cigars, not money. Read more

Red Sox Nation

Posted: 11:44 AM ET, 11/01/07

Over the years as a Red Sox fan, I learned early on not to gloat. After all, there was that painful lesson in 1978 when I moved away from New York to Mexico and my parting shot to my Yankee fan roommate was something along the lines of “don’t worry, there’s always next year. Read more

Tasting the Very Best of 2007

Posted: 03:45 PM ET, 10/30/07

This is a very serious and most rewarding time of year. I’m sitting down with my Cigar Aficionado team to select the best cigar of 2007.

A Question of Cigar Etiquette

Posted: 05:10 PM ET, 10/29/07

Saturday night I attended a pre-Halloween party with costumes optional. The host dressed as a very convincing Groucho Marx, complete with a pith helmet and a—shall we say—unfortunate cigar that he waved around as a prop. I was wearing a less remarkable outfit (smoking jacket with ascot), but it fit into the general cigar motif, and I asked if a smoke were permissible. Read more

A Smoke With Carlos Fuente Jr.

Posted: 02:07 PM ET, 10/28/07

On Friday night I dropped in on a local cigar shop and lounge, Club Perfecto in South Norwalk, Connecticut. Carlos Fuente Jr. was dropping by, so I wanted to say hello.

I got there before Carlos, who was stuck in traffic. It was a rainy Friday night, and the ride from New York City was taking twice as long as usual. Read more

My New Place To Smoke

Posted: 12:27 PM ET, 10/25/07

I have recently stepped out of a hell that every knowing homeowner has either experienced or dreads: home renovation. Two years have passed from the day my wife first uttered the fateful term until now when my life is back to the near normality that I can probably call mild disarray. Read more

A Pleasant Surprise in Milan

Posted: 10:17 AM ET, 10/24/07

I spent a few days in Milan this week with my kids during their half-term break from school in England. I went to the fashion city to take them to my friend’s rock concert, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush. By the way, their new album Snakes and Arrows is superb. Read more

A Classic Cigar

Posted: 01:59 PM ET, 10/23/07

I had a classic cigar last week. It’s so rare that one of the best encyclopedias of Cuban cigars, written by Min Ron Nee and Adriano Martinez, doesn’t even include it.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Our Jan/Feb issue will feature a pair of performers that you all know, and most of you probably love. Read more
