Trade Show Blog—First Smokes

Posted: 12:04 PM ET, 07/14/08

First things first—I keep calling this IPCPR trade show by its old name, RTDA, so from now on I’m just going to say “trade show.” Problem solved.

It’s Monday morning here in Las Vegas, and in one hour the trade show begins. Read more

Going to RTDA—I Mean, IPCPR

Posted: 10:43 AM ET, 07/13/08

Cigar cutter? Check. Notebooks? Check. Flip video camera? Check. In a few hours I’m flying out to Las Vegas for the annual IPCPR trade show (I still call the darn thing RTDA, just like everybody else in the cigar industry) and I’m getting my gear together. Read more

Toys for Boys

Posted: 02:20 PM ET, 07/11/08

I was in Switzerland last week for a few days visiting various watch factories including Vacheron Constantin, Piaget, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Panerai, and International Watch Company. All are part of the Richemont Group. My friend Alain Li, regional chief executive for Richemont Asia Pacific Limited in Hong Kong, organized the trip. Read more

Saved By The Cigar

Posted: 03:56 PM ET, 07/08/08

Here’s a novel form of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Apparently, when Pablo Picasso was born in 1881, he wasn’t breathing and the midwife gave him up as stillborn. A quick-thinking and cigar-smoking uncle had other ideas, however. Read more

Happy Fourth

Posted: 02:02 PM ET, 07/03/08

The office is closing early, so I’m packing up some cigars and getting ready to head home. Tomorrow is one of my favorite holidays, Independence Day, and I plan on celebrating in smoky style.

It’s a day for family and for cookouts. Read more

Cigars, Economics and Cardiology

Posted: 11:12 AM ET, 07/01/08

The irony of my job at Cigar Aficionado and my participation on its tasting panel is that I don’t often buy cigars. I don’t have to. About the only time it happens is when I’m in a country with more liberal policies about selling the bounty of the island nation to the south of Florida. Read more

Charlie Sifford’s Cigar

Posted: 02:59 PM ET, 06/26/08

I attended a banquet this week of the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association. There were a number of honorees, including Judy Rankin and Gary Player, but the Gold Tee award, the group’s highest honor, went to Charlie Sifford, the 86-year-old former PGA Tour professional who broke golf’s color barrier at the professional level. The Danger of Smoking Cigars

Posted: 10:20 AM ET, 06/25/08

I had a nasty run-in with a Juan Lopez Selección No. 1 the other night! It was after a serious wine tasting dinner at my house with Bibi Gratez, the hipster winemaker/owner of one of my favorite wines in Tuscany, Testamatta.

I had already smoked the most of the corona gorda (46 ring gauge by 5 5/8 inches) when it slipped out of my hand and bounced onto the inside of my left elbow--ash down. Read more

The Ultimate Personal Humidor?

Posted: 10:08 AM ET, 06/24/08

I’m jealous. I recently visited what has to be the ultimate home humidor.

Recently I flew to Nashville, Tennessee, to meet with the principals of C.A.O. International Inc. Nashville is a great place, lush and green, full of trees, with a hip downtown powered by the city’s music business. Read more

Almost Nirvana

Posted: 10:16 AM ET, 06/18/08

While Dave Savona was in danger of getting blown off the beach on Saturday night, I was sitting in my dry, warm den eating burgers and potato salad, chatting with four golfing buddies (the same crew who went to West Palm Beach with me in February, plus a mutual friend) and watching the U.
