A July 4th to Remember

Posted: 02:31 PM ET, 07/24/08

I was away from the office during the first part of July, and for much of the time, almost off the grid in the backcountry of the Canadian Rockies near Lake Louise. But I had a couple of “cigar moments” that I’ll share with you over the next week. Read more

A Long Awaited Favorite Debuts at IPCPR

Posted: 10:13 AM ET, 07/21/08

I remember when Ernesto Perez-Carrillo first told me about his La Gloria Cubana Artesanos de Miami. I’m pretty sure it was in New York at Cigar Aficionado’s Night to Remember dinner two years ago. I was sitting at the General Cigar table, we got to chatting, and he handed me a prototype and told me it was a new project he was working on. Read more

The Golden Age of Cigars

Posted: 11:25 AM ET, 07/18/08

I got back this week too from IPCPR, or what we now refer to as the cigar retailer trade show, in Las Vegas. James Suckling and Dave Savona have done a fantastic job of telling you about all the great things that went on there, and I can tell you, there’s still more to come. Read more

A Lovely Fuente and Other New Cigars

Posted: 02:41 PM ET, 07/17/08

I know it won’t be easy to get sympathy here, but sometimes I have a hard job. And my job is never tougher than when it comes time to get info on new cigars from the Fuentes.

Now the Fuentes are great people, and Carlos Fuente Jr. and Wayne Suarez are dear friends of mine. Read more

Last Night's Real Cigar Convention in Vegas

Posted: 07:04 PM ET, 07/16/08

The day was long and smoky yesterday during the cigar show in Vegas. My eyes felt like someone threw sand in them by the end of the day. But it’s been worth it. I have smoked numerous excellent cigars and had some great conversations with dozens of cigarmakers. Read more

Playboy Bunnies and Ballsy Smokes

Posted: 12:18 PM ET, 07/15/08

A lot of the action during the cigar show in Las Vegas happens after the convention hall is locked shut. Most of the top cigar companies host dinners and parties for the attendees each night. Plus, there is the added attraction of Vegas with all of its obvious diversions and pleasures. Read more

Monday at IPCPR

Posted: 08:32 PM ET, 07/14/08

The International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers trade show began today at 10 a.m., and I’ve been smoking since opening bell. I have a notebook full of scribbles on new cigars that I’m going to share with you.

My first smoke was the new Aroma de Cuba Edicion Especial from Nicaragua that I wrote about online and in Cigar Insider. Read more

Great Start To Whatever It Is

Posted: 12:11 PM ET, 07/14/08

We had a warm up dinner for the cigar show in Las Vegas at Bouchon Restaurant in the Venetian. There were about two dozen cigar producers standing out on the terrace of the restaurant. Obviously, we couldn¹t smoke in the restaurant. So thank God it was not boiling hot. Read more

Trade Show Blog—First Smokes

Posted: 12:04 PM ET, 07/14/08

First things first—I keep calling this IPCPR trade show by its old name, RTDA, so from now on I’m just going to say “trade show.” Problem solved.

It’s Monday morning here in Las Vegas, and in one hour the trade show begins. Read more

Going to RTDA—I Mean, IPCPR

Posted: 10:43 AM ET, 07/13/08

Cigar cutter? Check. Notebooks? Check. Flip video camera? Check. In a few hours I’m flying out to Las Vegas for the annual IPCPR trade show (I still call the darn thing RTDA, just like everybody else in the cigar industry) and I’m getting my gear together. Read more
