Altadis S.A., the world’s largest cigar company, makes tens of millions of cigars by hand each year, but only one of its brands is made entirely from Dominican tobacco: the Mi Dominicana by José Seijas. Named for the man who has run its largest factory for 23 years, the Mi Dominicana Robusto is a rich, spicy and savory smoke with a core of earthy, leathery flavors and a long finish. In 2008, the company made only 26,000 Mi Dominicana cigars—a miniscule amount for Altadis. Seijas says that the company has been experimenting with Dominican wrapper for about a decade.
