Earthquake Strikes Honduran Port
Posted: Monday, June 01, 2009
By Gregory Mottola
A major earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude struck off the coast of Honduras in the early morning of May 28, toppling homes and bridges throughout the country, injuring 40 and killing six, according to the Associated Press. The quake damaged Puerto Cortes, Honduras' main cigar exportation seaport, resulting in minor delays on shipments of cigars.
Puerto Cortes, a major port for Central America, was damaged, but cigar shipments are expected to be offset by only a few days. The port was closed on May 28, quickly reopening the next day with limited operation.
"The delays are only minor. I was supposed to have one 40 foot- and one 20 foot- container shipped out on Friday, but it went out on Sunday," said Christian Eiroa, president of Camacho Cigars Inc., whose cigars are made in Honduras.
At the time of this writing, Eiroa said that the port was still not up to full operation. Full service was expected to be restored this week.
Puerto Cortes is located on the East side of Central America, north of San Pedro Sula.
