Long Beach One Step Closer to Allowing Smoking

Posted: Wednesday, February 04, 2009

By Alejandro Benes

A majority of the Long Beach, California, city council followed the recommendations of the city attorney and voted last night to allow cigar and other forms of smoking in “smoking lounges.”

The vote on Tuesday night must be followed up by approval of the council after a “second reading,” according to a deputy city attorney.

“If the Ordinance is approved at the next regular meeting of the City Council for final reading [Tuesday], then it shall take effect on the 31st day after its approval,” explained Linda Trang, deputy city attorney for Long Beach.

Passions ran high on both sides of the issue during the meeting. At least one council member noted that many emails in support of revising the law had been received by several on the governing body.
