Boston Commission Set to Decide on Smoking Ban

Boston’s Public Health Commission has finished accepting written comments on a set of controversial tobacco regulations it had recently proposed, and now cigar bar owners as well as smokers can only wait for the final vote.
Among other rules, the proposed tobacco regulations would force cigar bars to close, prohibit outdoor smoking and expand workplace smoking restrictions if the Commission approves them on Nov. 13.
Since news of the regulations first became known, cigar bar owners have been up in arms, feeling they are the targets of an unfair antismoking campaign.
The city’s cigar bar owners have been fighting back, staging a protest during an Oct. 8 public hearing as well as urging cigar smokers to write letters to Mayor Thomas Menino.
