Casino Smoking Ban Loses Steam

Posted: Tuesday, May 20, 2008

By Andrew Nagy

Connecticut House Democrats effectively killed a bill that would have extended the state smoking ban to include Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos before it even hit the House floor for debate.

In a closed-door meeting on May 6, the House Democratic caucus voted nearly two to one against the bill, House Speaker James A. Amann told The Day newspaper.

Both the Mohegan Tribe, owner of Mohegan Sun, and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, owner of Foxwoods, argued that the bill proposal exceeded jurisdiction in its attempt to legislate reservation lands.

“On the one hand, we are pleased that the House leadership and members did the honorable thing with respect to this proposal, but we are saddened that we have lost three months when we could have been talking on a government-to-government basis,” a Mashantucket Pequot spokesman said.
