Virginia Smoke Ban Rejected Again

Posted: Tuesday, March 11, 2008

By Michael Moretti

For the fourth year in a row, legislation to create a statewide smoking ban in Virginia has died in subcommittee.

The proposed smoking ban -- backed by Democratic Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, who passed an executive order banning smoking in state offices and vehicles in 2006 -- was approved by a narrow margin in the Senate on February 5 in the form of several bills. The bills were then passed to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives on February 12 and referred to the General Laws Committee, which kept them off the House agenda. This is the same committee where previous versions of the ban have been left to die.
