The Super Bowl Calls for Big Cigars

Posted: Wednesday, January 30, 2008

By David Savona

Whether you're a die-hard Giants fan, a New England Patriots fan or just a good old football fan, Super Bowl Sunday is a special day. It means too much food, plenty of great drinks and great cigars. If you're like me, one of those great cigars will be something big: a double corona, or even an "A."

I love big cigars, but they're not practical, especially in today's hectic times. Standard Cuban double coronas measure 7 5/8 inches long with a 49 ring gauge. "A's" are even bigger, 9 1/4 inches long with ring gauges of 47. Each takes a long time to smoke, maybe two hours or so if you take your time. But they can be some of the finest cigars in the world.

Now Super Bowls are long affairs, so Sunday's game is your big chance to break out one of those monster cigars. Here are the highest-rated "A's" and double coronas from the past four years of Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider, compiled by tasting coordinator Greg Mottola:

Those are some amazing cigars. Any one would be a great Super Bowl smoke.

I don't miss Super Bowls, but I'm especially excited that the Giants are involved. For me, watching the Giants play is a tradition. And I'm superstitious enough to follow certain steps to make sure things go well for my team. I own a few items of Giants clothing, including a sweatshirt from 1986 that, according to my wife, makes me look like a sausage. (Apparently I was a little smaller in 1986.) I also have a few different shirts, including one celebrating this year's NFC championship. But on Sunday, there's only one shirt for me -- a simple blue shirt with the letters "NY" in huge, crumbling, white type. I've worn it each week throughout the playoffs, and the Giants won each game. It hasn't been washed, and it won't be washed until Monday.

Another part of the tradition is where I'll be watching the game -- my smoking room, which one of my friends dubbed The Bunker. The uninitiated would call it a basement. But it's the one room in my house that I completely control, and it's the place where I gather with my buddies to smoke. Here's me in The Bunker this morning:

The Bunker inhabits a special place in my heart. It has just about everything I need -- heat, a television, a refrigerator, two couches and a chair, a poker table, a half dozen ashtrays and plenty of full cigar humidors. While my wife has entered The Bunker on occasion, she leaves it alone. It amuses her in many ways, and she knows it's my little place to hang and relax.

Even if you don't have a Bunker of your own, you need to find a place where cigars are welcome. That might be your local cigar bar, cigar shop or maybe even a porch or a garage. You want a cigar-friendly environment where you won't be hassled.

So whatever place ends up being your very own bunker, make the most of Super Bowl Sunday. Enjoy the game!
