Cigar Shipments Up 7 Percent
Posted: Wednesday, January 02, 2008
By David Savona
Exports of premium cigars to the United States were up 7.1 percent for 2007 as of the end of September, compared to the same period one year ago. Thanks to growth from the Dominican Republic, the world’s largest producer of premium cigars, and especially brisk growth from Nicaragua, the market was on pace to see imports reach 343 million cigars. If the pace holds, it would be the best
year for cigar imports since the 1990s.
America imported 320 million cigars in 2006, down 5.8 percent from 340 million in 2005, but far higher than the average 260 million imported annually from 2000 to 2004.
Some of the busiest months of the year had yet to be tallied, so the final import figure could change.
