Connoisseur's Corner, October 2007

Posted: Friday, December 21, 2007

By CA Staff

The late 1980s and early 1990s were wonderful years for Cuban cigars. Production was relatively small, not rushed, and the cigars coming out of Havana at that time were particularly fine smokes. Two of the best of that era are tasted here, two and a half decades after they were first shipped. The Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona was the greatest cigar made in the world at that time. It was a remarkable, large cigar, and 25 years of age have taken away none of its brilliance. It is still rich and full, with a finish a mile long. Possibly the second-best cigar of that time was the Cohiba Robusto (shown here two band designs ago). It is also strong and rich, and joins the growing ranks of our classic cigars, which score 95 points or more.

Reprinted from the October 2007 issue of Cigar Aficionado

Label

Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona (1992)

99

This cigar still shows why it was one of Cigar Aficionado's greatest cigars ever. What a smoke. And it was made during the period when production was very small and the cigar was mind-blowing. It is rich and powerful with loads of spicy, tobacco, cedar and earthy character. Full bodied and loaded with flavors. It goes on for minutes on the palate. Love it. It's from a cabinet of 50 smokes.

Label

Davidoff Château Margaux (1988)

98

This cigar has amazing finesse and spice, yet it's full of character with masses of cedar, coffee and tea. Full bodied and long with a refined and refreshing character. It's hard to think it could be much better.

Label

Cohiba Robusto (1991)

96

This cigar highlights the good days of Cuban cigar production. It has a perfect draw, and smooth leathery flavors around a core of cedar wood. It also is what you'd expect from a Cohiba Robusto: strong, with rich, full flavors.

Label

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 (1995)

95

Although this cigar has a bit of a firm draw, it has a wonderful woody finish, and notes of cherries and pecans on the palate. It is showing its 12 years of age gracefully.

Label

Saint Luis Rey Regio (1998)

94

This is a delicious corona gorda with plenty of light and cedary tobacco character that develops into a decadent, almost meaty character on the palate. It's full and flavorful and finishes with a minty, tobacco undertone.
--James Suckling

Label

Davidoff 1000 (1988)

You know a little panetela can deliver lots of flavor. This is incredibly spicy and fresh with lots of taste and character for a small, thin cigar. Full bodied, it shows loads of tobacco, tea and light coffee flavors.
