General Cigar Acquires Certain Assets of Havana Honeys

Posted: Monday, December 10, 2007

By David Savona

General Cigar Co. bolstered its flavored cigar business Friday with the acquisition of the Havana Honeys trademark. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but General Cigar parent company Swedish Match AB said the deal "will have no significant impact on the Swedish Match Group."

General, which is headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, makes cigars in the Dominican Republic and Honduras, and presently has a small flavored cigar business. It makes Helix Remix, plus it sells Kahlúa Cigars Delicioso, a brand made by Drew Estate, the producer of the Acid Cigar brand.

Havana Honeys come in a variety of flavors, including peach, chocolate and honey.

"The company's purchase of Havana Honeys represents an opportunity to strengthen our position within the growing flavored segment of the premium cigar industry," said General Cigar president Angel Daniel Núñez in a statement. "The acquisition of such a prominent brand is a great complement to our existing portfolio."

Havana Honeys, based in Las Vegas, was founded in 1997 as a cart inside Las Vegas's McCarran International Airport. General's purchase includes the brand trademark, plus inventory and related assets to support Havana Honeys' premium flavored cigar business. Havana Honeys founder Joe Gold is keeping the company's little-cigar business, plus operation of the Havana Honeys retail outlet inside McCarran International.
