Connoisseur's Corner, June 2007

Posted: Friday, August 03, 2007

Each of this sextet of Cuban cigars rated outstanding on our 100-point scale, although none reached 95 points, which we consider classics. The cigars have from 13 to 23 years of age, and some can age for many years more while others seem to be nearing their peak. Two of the cigars are very thin: the Cohiba Lancero and the Montecristo Especial No. 1. Each is known in Cuban cigar factories as a Laguito No. 1 and in the rest of the cigar world as a gran panetela. They are the type of cigar one wouldn't expect to age terribly well, given the relatively small amount of tobacco that can be packed into such a thin shape, yet each is smoking beautifully. They were among the highest scorers here. The largest cigar in the test, the El Rey del Mundo Taino (a Churchill) took the lowest score.

Label

Davidoff Château Haut-Brion (1989)

94

This is one of my favorite cigars ever. It shows that small smokes such as a petit corona can deliver lots of smoking pleasure. It's full bodied, with lots of tea, honey, cedar and tobacco character. Gorgeous.

Montecristo Especial No. 1 (1994)

I remember the first Monte Especial No. 1 I had in Paris in 1985. I fell in love with the panetela shape then. Packed with soft leather and cedar flavors, this Monte epitomizes an aged cigar: it's smooth, well balanced and smokes perfectly.

Cohiba Lancero (1989)

What impresses me the most about this cigar is the texture -- it is so round, soft and velvety, yet it also delivers lots of honey, spice, cedar and cappuccino flavors. Subtle and refined. Excellent.

Punch Royal Seleccíon No. 11 (1993)

This is a full-bodied, rich cigar with light spice, cedar and tobacco character. A very, very pretty smoke.

Romeo Y Julieta Exhibición No. 4 (1993)

Great start for this robusto right off the first puff. It's a smooth, creamy powerhouse with solid notes of coffee beans and a lingering richness on the palate. While reaching its peak now, it will continue to improve.

El Rey Del Mundo Taino (1984)

This cigar is showing its age. This is a pepper bomb, but has a smooth quality without any bite. A firm draw and a fairly light wrapper color mask the full range of pepper and coffee bean flavors. It's a nice, easy smoke.
