Connoisseur's Corner, February 2007

Cuban Davidoffs are among the cigars most prized by collectors, and the Dom Perignon typically commands some of the highest prices at cigar auctions. These Churchill-sized smokes measure 7 inches long by 47 ring gauge, and like all Cuban Davidoffs they are no longer made. While it has never rated a perfect 100 points—we have given that honor to only one Davidoff size, the smaller, stronger d'Yquem—this is the second time the Don Perignon has rated 99 points. Two younger Cuban cigars joined the ranks of our classic smokes: a 1990 Romeo y Julieta Churchill and a 1995 La Gloria Cubana Medaille D'Or No. 2. The Romeo, one of the world's best known cigars, is smoking beautifully after 17 years of age. The less popular La Gloria was nearly as savory at 12 years old.

Label

Davidoff Dom Perignon (1988)

99

I was given this to smoke by Edward Sahakian, owner of the Davidoff shop in London. It has a beautiful dark wrapper and delivers a wonderful milk chocolate, earthy and cedar character on the palate. It's aromatic with fresh and flowery flavor. A superb smoke all around and one of the best Dom Perignons I have had in a long time.

Label

Romeo y Julieta Churchill (1990)

96

From the glory days of Cuban cigars, this Romeo y Julieta Churchill is one of the benchmarks for that size. Filled with a core of earthy, leathery flavors, it draws perfectly and burns like a charm. There is a light pepper quality to the finish, but it is absolutely smooth.

Label

La Gloria Cubana Medaille d'Or No. 2 (1995)

95

A beautifully aged cigar from the mid-1990s. It has hints of nutmeg and pepper on the firm draw, with a solid finish of cedar wood. Very smooth and delicious.

Label

Bolivar Belicoso Fino Special Reserve (2000)

91

This came from a special humidor of 100 cigars that was made a few years back to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Bolivar. It holds two bundles of 50 smokes. It's strong, spicy and full bodied with lots of black coffee and tobacco flavors. It needs some time—give it two more years at least.

Label

Cuaba Generoso (1996)

90

I bought this box in London when the Cuaba brand first came out on the market and I was disappointed. It was rough to say the least. But now it has mellowed and delivers spicy, cedar character in a medium-bodied smoke.

Label

Partagas Limited Reserve Royale (1996)

89

A mild smoke that has aged into a mellow, smooth-tasting cigar. There are light notes of pepper and a solid core of cedar on the palate.
