Connoisseur's Corner, October 2006

Posted: Wednesday, December 27, 2006

The late '80s and early '90s were fine years for Havana cigars, especially large ones. A decade or more in the humidor has turned several of these great cigars into outstanding and even classic smokes. The Punch Double Corona doesn't have the fame of Cuba's Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona, but at its best it is nothing short of remarkable. With nearly 20 years of box age, it still shows signs of youthful exuberance and strong notes of black pepper wrapped around a sublime core of toasty qualities. It was nearly perfect. A younger, rarer Cohiba “A,” made especially for a Cigar Aficionado dinner in 1994, was earthy and marvelous, scoring 97 points, while a Sir Winston with more than 20 years of age has become more mild, showing finesse and character.

Reprinted from the October 2006 issue of Cigar Aficionado

Label

Punch Double Corona (1987)

98

This is a delicious cigar with an unusual peppery finish. Although its draw was a bit firm, it was even and smooth. There are toasty and cedary notes on the solid core of tobacco flavors. The peppery finish makes it a very distinctive smoke.

Cohiba "A" (1993)

97

A beautiful, dark wrapper. This cigar is just a touch firm on the draw, but it is packed with tobacco flavors that have a core of earthy notes, and it has a long, cedary finish. An excellent cigar.

Label

Partagas Lusitania (1992)

97

This cigar has a perfect wrapper and construction. The draw is firm, but even. It has a total richness on the palate, with a creamy, coffee bean flavor that is backed up by earthy smooth elements, and it has a long, long finish. Full bodied. It is a great cigar from a top vintage of Cuba.

Label

Cohiba Siglo V (1993)

95

This was the first release of the Siglo V and it is smoking wonderfully. I had forgotten how rich yet balanced the original Siglos were. Floral aromas with cedar, tea and spices follow through to a fresh and flavorful aftertaste. Full bodied.

Label

H. Upmann No. 1 (1993)

92

This is a well-aged, smooth-tasting cigar with medium-bodied smoke. There is a powerful cedar note on this cigar. It is well balanced with a touch of pepper, and has a slightly flinty finish.

Label

H. Upmann Sir Winston (1983)

92

This is a Churchill cigar that came in a dark black box. It is mild and refined with cedar, honey and tobacco character. It's medium bodied, long and caressing. Fabulous draw.
