Connoisseur's Corner, February 2006
Three cigars were rated classic in this selection of aged smokes. The Cohiba Pyramide from 1996 was nearly perfect, brimming with complex flavors. The Davidoff Dom Perignon, among the most collectible of Cuban cigars, has been knocked for being past its prime, but this 1988 example proved quite extraordinary. A 1996 Fuente Fuente OpusX has also aged quite well, scoring 97 points. The review of the 1998 Ashton Virgin Sun Grown shows the impact of age on a cigar. This zesty, strong smoke has mellowed into something quite more sublime after seven years of rest. Even a tiny Montecristo Joyita has become stellar after a decade of aging.

Cohiba Pyramide (1996)
99 This came from a box of 25 that was made for an auction in Toronto. It was like the 1994 torpedo made for a charity dinner and sale in Paris for this magazine. It is very rich and powerful still with creamy, cedar and coffee aromas and flavors. There are undertones of honey and tobacco. This shows wonderful depth and character. --James Suckling

Davidoff Dom Perignon (1988)
98 Some people say that the DP is fading away now with more than a decade of age, but
this cigar proves otherwise. It shows loads of spicy, cedar and espresso character with a tea undertone. It's rich and fresh yet subtle, and lasts for minutes on your palate. A superb cigar. --James Suckling

Fuente Fuente OpusX Petit Lancero (1996)
97 What a revelation! This is a great cigar, filled with smooth cedar notes, backed with an earthy coffee bean flavor. But it also has a note of sweetness, that elusive black cherry element that some cigarmakers talk about. It is a medium- to full-bodied smoke with a beautiful reddish-brown wrapper. The total package. --Gordon Mott

Ashton Virgin Sun Grown Robusto (1998)
94 This cigar was a monster in its youth, brimming with robust leather notes and red
pepper spice. Seven years of age have tempered its fires, resulting in a sublime, mellow and rich smoke. There's a deep core of sweet cedar, coffee and nuts. Delicious. This has matured well. --David Savona

Bolivar Royal Corona (1995)
93 This is how I remember the real deal from Bolivar! This is 10 years old but still powerful and rich -- almost too much. Full and strong with black coffee and tobacco. It was almost tannic and astringent, but delivered so much character. --James Suckling

Montecristo Joyita (1993)
92 Gives you a lot for a panetela, with a cedary and refined character and coffee, cream and light nut flavors. Medium bodied, with a lovely freshness and a long finish. It's all there. --James Suckling
