Shanghai Tang Humidor

Posted: Monday, July 10, 2006

By Michael Moretti

Even if you're not a Chinese gangster with a back office in a Shanghai nightclub, the Dragon Humidor from Shanghai Tang may still look sporting on your desk.

As well as crafting Chinese-influenced clothing, and accessories for the home and person, in loud-colored, Asian-influenced patterns and lines, Shanghai Tang also has a humidor that seems to follow the same design philosophy. Crafted with a black high-gloss lacquer, the box is trimmed in a jade-colored veneer and features a contorted marquetry Chinese dragon on the lid with its mouth agape, brandishing its claws.

At $770, the humidor might seem like all show and no go, but it has many of the attributes that point to quality. While we did not test it, the box does have a nice mahogany interior with flush lines and seams, as well as a soft seal that closes with a puff of air. It has space for approximately 50 sticks and comes with a key lock, humidification system and hygrometer. None of the equipment is state-of-the-art, but if you are looking for a desktop showpiece that will spark conversation and is pretty well put together, this is not a bad way to go. If you are a Shanghai gangster, well then, it's a must have.

The Shanghai Tang fashion label is owned by the Richemont Group, which also counts Alfred Dunhill and Cartier among its interests. For more information, call 888 252-TANG (8264).
