Dunhill Harold Riley Lighter

Posted: Monday, February 07, 2005

By Michael Moretti

Dunhill takes pride in not only its own products and craftsmanship, but also in its motherland, the United Kingdom. This is why the 2004 Harold Riley limited-edition lighter featuring the Loch Lomond Golf Club, is a bespoke fit.

The sterling silver, Rollagas-style lighter, part of the Dunhill’s Great Golf Courses of the World collection, has inlaid carvings of Nick Faldo pitching a shot to the green at the first Loch Lomond World Invitational in 1996 and, on the flip side, an image of the Eighth green, with the grandiose Rossdhu House in the backdrop. The cap of the lighter is inscribed with notes about the featured images, which mimics the remarks jotted down by the U.K. native artist in his sketchbook that serve as captions to accompany his drawings.

The piece is elaborately presented in a black-lacquered wooden box with a white leather interior. It includes a drawer in the base and a book of Riley’s sketches and notes on the course. The book takes the reader on a comprehensive walking journey of the course detailing the trials and tribulations a player faces with each new tee. Each hole is sketched with a black and white panorama picture from the tee and one from a bird’s-eye view.

The usual accoutrements -- a flint flame with size adjustment and a refillable tank -- are included. The lighter itself is, however, more of a collector’s piece given the heavy weight and price, which comes in at $2,550.

Two hundred eighty-eight Harold Riley 2004 edition lighters were made. They are available exclusively through Dunhill stores.
