Tip of the Week

Q: What was the first 'superpremium' cigar?

A: Pleiades.

The year was 1983. The premium cigar market topped out at about $2 to $2.50 per cigar for the larger sizes of brands such as Macanudo, H. Upmann, Don Diego, Montecruz and Royal Jamaica. Then came the introduction of Pleiades and, consequently, the creation of a new price category dubbed "superpremium." The larger-sized cigars from this brand sold for close to $5. Over time, the new category cleared the way for the creation other high-priced, boutique brands such as Zino, Ashton and Juan Clemente.
