Tough on Cuba

Posted: Wednesday, June 30, 2004

By Michael Moretti

Today, the United States officially tightened its restrictions on travel to Cuba. The restrictions, announced last month, are part of President Bush's initiative for a New Cuba and are designed to hasten the end of Fidel Castro’s dictatorship.

The new policy curtails educational travel programs from the United States, as well as limiting the number of gift parcels that can be sent to Cuba along with the number of family visits allowed to the island. Gift parcels can now be sent only to immediate family members. Family members are constrained to one trip every three years for a maximum of 14 days as opposed to once per year with no limit on the length of the visit.

In addition, per diem expenses when visiting have dropped from $164 per day to $50 per day. Special licenses will be issued for travel to Cuba. The government-issued licenses that immigrants used in the past will no longer be valid.

People still visiting Cuba as of today have until August to return to the United States before facing penalties.
