The long-awaited Montecristo Edmundo debuted in France last week and is now on sale in various shops around the world.
The size -- which European Editor James Suckling first described in a February 11 story on CigarAficionado.com -- is a bit shorter than the newest Cohiba, the Siglo VI. The Edmundo measures 5 3/8 inches by 52 ring. Suckling, who smoked one fresh off a roller’s table at the José Martí factory, scored the cigar a provisional 92 points.
Cigar Insider will soon publish a rating of the cigar.
There have been limited releases of new Montecristo sizes, such as the Millennium Reserve Robusto, but the Edmundo is the first addition to the main line in 30 years. The Edmundo is named after the main character in Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Montecristo, from which the brand gets its name.
Some international retailers outside of France also had the cigars listed for sale as this story was published. Prices ranged from about $400 to $500 for a box of 25, considerably more than other Montecristo sizes (save for the 9-inch-long “A”) and more than many Cohibas. Also in Cigar News:
