Arnold's Patio Cigar Bar
Posted: Tuesday, February 17, 2004
By Michael Moretti California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is taking a stance on smoking -- probably out in back of his office on the cigar-friendly patio he is constructing at the state capitol building in Sacramento.
"It's a more positive environment where they can all be on an equal footing, as opposed to everyone going into the governor's office where he's behind his desk," Terri Carbaugh, spokeswoman for Schwarzenegger, told the Associated Press.
Word spread quickly over the weekend through the Golden State that the action movie megastar-turned-statesman had plans to convert the capitol's interior courtyard into an outdoor cigar promenade. Schwarzenegger, never shy about his propensity for a premium stick, is a two-term cover man for Cigar Aficionado magazine.
Arnold had plans to use the cigar-friendly patio for a Valentine's Day smoking party complete with cigar bar, according to reports. On Saturday, February 14, protesters showed up at the capitol to denounce the governor's cigar and renovation plans.
According to sources at the scene, protesters held picket signs and other paraphernalia, including a death-knelling oxygen tank, a cigar-smoking mannequin on a gubernatorial hospital gurney, and a headstone bearing the inscription "Your Name Here."
After 1998, California became virtually smoke-free. Smoking was banned in all restaurants and bars and in nearly every all-indoor space, even in areas within 20 feet of open windows or doorways.
