Boutique cigarmaker Puros Indios Cigar Co. will debut a bargain-priced line of cigars featuring aged Habana 2000 wrappers at this week's trade show. It's called Cienfuegos (which translates to "100 fires") and, according to the company, it's a full-bodied cigar.
Made in Danlí, Honduras, the six-sized Cienfuego line combines Dominican filler tobacco and a Nicaraguan binder with a four-year-old Habana 2000 wrapper leaf grown in Ecuador. "It's a 1999 wrapper," said Carlos Diez, director of marketing. "Four years ago, we saw that everyone had Habana 2000 at that time, so we said, 'Let's hold onto ours for now.' Time went by, and we almost forgot about it."
Diez said, this line is as strong as its namesake. "We wanted to make the strongest cigar we could without compromising the taste and the aroma," continued Diez. "We take pride in our cigar's aroma."
Diez said Puros Indios was going to release 100,000 Cienfuego cigars this year, 20,000 of which will be the robusto-sized Hot Shot, which measures 5 inches by 50 ring and will retail for $2.60. The other sizes are Blaze, which measures 6 by 52 and will cost $2.60; Rookie, measuring 5 1/2 by 45, with a $2.20 retail price; No. 5, a pyramid measuring 5 by 50 with a price tag of $2.20; No. 6, measuring 6 1/2 by 46 with a retail price of $2.40; and No. 7, measuring 7 by 48 with a price of $2.80.
The cigars will come individually wrapped in cedar sheaths, packed 25 to a box. The boxes are uniquely designed, wrapped in a layer of burlap. The Cienfuego logo is branded into the cloth, which has to be broken in order to open the box.
The cigars are made under the supervision of Rolando Reyes Sr., the man who created Cuba Aliados and Puros Indios. Cienfuegos will be available in retail stores towards the end of August. Also in Cigar News:
