Boxing and Cigars Come Together on Cape Cod
Posted: Monday, July 14, 2003
By Michael S. Marsh As Cigar Aficionado senior editor David Savona proved during his recent journey into the world of boxing, puros and pugilism go together like cold beer and barbecue, and no punch up should be without a stockpile of premium cigars. With this in mind, the "Battlezone in the Tent" on July 18 is bringing together top-ranked boxing and world-class cigars for a night that fight fans won't want to miss.
From the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, Massachusetts, the evening will be broadcast on ESPN2's "Friday Night Fights" program. There are six fights on the card, including the main event -- a 10-round, light heavyweight bout between Julian "Mr. KO" Letterlough and Richard "The Destroyer" Hall. The five scheduled undercards feature a number of former champions and current challengers such as "Sucra" Ray Oliviera, Jaime "The Hurricane" Clampitt and Martin "The Irish Assassin" Thornton.
While the boxing is the highlight of the evening, cigars will play a big role. Davidoff of Geneva will be providing cigars at a VIP cigar tent located outside the main tent. Here, fight fans will also be able to enjoy food from Outback Steakhouse, cocktails and some eye candy provided by Hooters of Hyannis. Smoking will not be allowed in the main tent, but Hank Tuohy, the president of Old Colony Sports and the event's promoter, expects the cigars to be a hit.
"This is a great formula to promote boxing and cigars," he said. "We want this event to have an upscale attitude, almost like you went to a cigar event and a boxing match broke out."
Ringside tickets, which include access to the VIP tent, are $125. Regular ringside seating is $65 and reserved seating is $35. Smokers will also have the opportunity to attend a party at Puff the Magic, a local tobacconist that will host a wine and cigar tasting after the fights.
