Cigar smokers in Florida are having a difficult time these days finding places to light a heater, but don't expect that to be the case when the PGA Tour hits the Sunshine State on March 6. Tabacalera Perdomo and the Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami have reached a deal that will make Perdomo the official cigar of the Ford Championship at Doral.
As official cigarmaker, Perdomo will sponsor a cigar tent, located between the first tee and the 18th green at the Doral Blue Course, the legendary Blue Monster, which is known to bring even seasoned golfers to their knees. Together with Bennington Tobacco of Boca Raton, Perdomo will be offering all of its cigar brands for sale, including the Perdomo Estate Selection and the Perdomo Reserve. The tent will also feature Perdomo torcedores showing off their skills, rolling fresh cigars for event-goers.
For Perdomo, this is the fifth consecutive year it has been the official cigarmaker of a Doral-sponsored PGA event. "It's a natural fit for us," said Albert Argenti, the chief marketing officer for the Miami-based cigarmaker. "The clientele at these events are geared towards cigars and it's a nice opportunity for us to expose our brands."
The Ford Championship, which in past years has been called the Doral-Ryder Open and the Genuity Championship, has been the first leg of the PGA Tour's "Florida Swing" since 1962. The tournament will feature such players as defending champion Ernie Els and Tiger Woods.
In related news, Perdomo has announced an agreement with the Honda Classic Foundation to be the official cigarmaker of the Honda Classic, which will be held at the Country Club at Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The tournament begins on March 12, and Perdomo will offer its full range of cigars.
