Georgia Bans Smoking
Posted: Friday, May 13, 2005
By Michael Moretti Another state bites the dust. Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue signed a bill this week to ban indoor smoking statewide making Georgia the eighth state to pass such a law.
State smokers can still puff in a few places, including retail tobacconists, designated hotel rooms, workplaces with independent air-purification systems, and restaurants and bars with an 18-and-over age restriction. Penalties for violators range between $100 and $500.
The age limit for the restaurant and bar exemption is an exception to the rule not seen in other states passing smoking bans. The original bill would have outlawed public indoor smoking virtually everywhere, but was amended by the Georgia House of Representatives.
Perdue signed the bill into law a day before the deadline for him to sign or veto bills passed in the most recent session of the state legislature. The law will go into effect on July 1. Also in Cigar News:
