No Butane on Board

Posted: Friday, December 10, 2004

By Michael Moretti

Torch lighters are already banned from passage on the plane, but soon all lighters could be cut from carry-on luggage.

This week Congress and the Senate overwhelmingly approved the intelligence-reform bill touted by President Bush. In addition to immigration and intelligence changes, the bill would further restrict items admitted for air travel.

The bill, if signed into law, would outlaw your disposable Bic and butane Djeep lighters from being carried on to the flight. This would place the lighters in the same category as knives, box-cutters, swords, scissors and meat cleavers, which are not permitted in carry-ons and will be conficated by security.

The Transportation Security Administration currently prohibits in carry-on and checked baggage all torch lighters, filled with fuel or emptied, along with all refill fuel containers. Zippo lighters are also not allowed. The TSA currently permits in carry-ons not checked bags, two disposable lighters and four books of matches -- strike-anywhere matches are not permitted.

The bill is now goes back to the president to be signed into law.
