Ernesto Padilla

Padilla Cigars
Padilla Habano Torpedo

Ernesto Padilla, who owns a variety of highly rated boutique Padilla brands, eschews overly thick smokes and prefers traditional sizes. "I personally enjoy lanceros, robustos, petit coronas and belicosos or torpedos—it's nice to see how the blend evolves in the above formats. I don't like ring gauges over 52 much. I think coronas really develop great. Too much tobacco, as found in larger ring gauges, does not mean more flavor—there are about six leaves in a blend depending on size. If we can combine these in a smaller format, you get a more rich, complex smoke than what's found in, say, a 60 ring gauge. People see large ring gauges and tend to think, 'More flavor.' Not really so."
