Si Edmundo...

I received an e-mail this morning from a friend who said he was disappointed with the quality of the latest production of Montecristo Edmundo. I was sort of miffed after I sent him two cigars to try, but you know stuff happens that we can’t explain, especially with Cuban cigars.

The two smokes had come from complete boxes from a friend’s stash in Havana. I chose the cigars myself. So they couldn’t have been fake. And, honestly, I have not seen fake Edmundos. Cohiba Esplendidos, yes, but not Edmundos. At least not yet

Maybe they were damaged in the post? I don’t know. He said it tasted weird and was underfilled. I don’t remember the cigars being like that when they were posted. Maybe he over humidified them? Or put them next to something unclean or funky in his humidor for a few days before smoking. Cigars are very absorbent.

Anyway, I am a great fan of Edmundo. Granted, the cigar was good but nothing special when it first came out a couple of years ago, but now I think it is one of the most satisfying that the Cubans produce. I think that changing most of the production to the new Upmann factory in Vedado has really helped. That factory is now one of the best on the island.

What are your thoughts about Edmundo?

Interesting...I had the same experience as James' friend last week. I even went so far as to e-mail to the local Habanos distributor and a few friends to make sure the dealer where the Edmundos came from was still on the up and up. I was assured by everyone that he was, but nevertheless, I tossed the cigar after just an inch.

I wasn't terribly impressed with the ones I have from 2005, but I'm not a huge fan of cigars over a 50 ring guage. I think that cigar becomes a bit more muted when they're that big. When a Monte #2 is on it's quite a bit better (plus torpedos are more comfortable to smoke), however, they tend to be less consistent than the Edmundo. From what I understand, 2006 production is a bit better, but I think that's across the board. With that said I have a few 3 packs od Edmundo's that have been aging about 9 months that I may try and see if they've improved

I have a box of Edmundos from 06, and I tried one of them last week in Vegas... it was excellent... smooth draw... perfect construction... flawless cigar.. it was my 1st edmundo, and I loved it.. I could only immagine what they'll be like in 2 to 3 years.. I guess I'll have to wait and see..

I just Edmundo-ed. Awesome cigar, surprised at the tannish ashes that it yielded. Very smoky, but very flavorful. When I got my hands on them, I looked at the label and thought they were fakes until I went here and saw the counterfeit gallery.

I bought two boxes immediately after their release. I put one box away to age and started smoking the other. I was not impressed. It took me a year to work through the first box and they did not improve. I sold the other. I have not had one from a recent batch; one can only hope they are better than the first production.
